My husband gave me this amazing gift of time yesterday, complete with a hotel room for a night away in a nearby city…close to an IKEA. IKEA, for frickin’ goodness sake.
So my day was lovely. My sister and I spent childless hours — yes, hours — wandering the pathways of IKEA, eating cheap Swedish food, and talking about life.
Then she said her goodbyes and I went to check into my hotel. Because my husband did this awesome thing of booking me a night away. Oh wait, I already said that. I just can’t get over the awesome-factor. And when I got to the hotel they told me that my room was going to be free. FREE. Yep. Free room due to an over-booking error.
Then, since the room was free, I thought it wise and necessary to get a pedicure at a local cheap nail place because my feet were lookin’ somethin’ awful and getting stuck on the covers of my bed due to calloused toes. TMI, sorry. So I did that. Alone. Then I ate some Mexican food because it’s my favorite. Also alone.
Then I went back to the room — my free room — to write. Dun dun duuuuuunnnnn. Time to write. And you know what happened? Nothing. I had no words. None. I am feeling led to write a book and no words were coming.
So I went to the vending machines. Because food is always the solution.
And when I got back to the room, since we don’t have cable at our house, and this big, flat-screen TV with 63 channels sat staring me in the face, I turned that baby on and ate Smartfood White Cheddar popcorn. But I couldn’t find anything to watch. So then I got on Instagram and asked for prayers for words. And then I wrote this post about the gift of time.
(Here’s where I get to my point…)
The time I spent yesterday was a precious gift — time with my sister, time to enjoy the luxuries of life, time to be silent. But there’s a time for rest and a time for work — a time to put our newly pedicured feet and our caffeinated energies into the things God has for us to do. Knowing what time it is becomes key.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Time is a big, huge, fat gift. And today, we’ll get 24 hours of it to choose what we do with it. Yes, it’s ok to watch some TV. And yes, it’s ok to do some shopping. And yes, it’s ok — and encouraged! — to pause and eat good food with friends. I did all of those things yesterday.
But I want to be faithful with my life. I want to work when He says to work and pause when He says to pause. And faithfulness with my life begins with faithfulness in my moments. And faithfulness with my moments flows from that place of communing with my God — the Maker and Sustainer of time.
Thankfully He’s grace, over and over and over again. And when we flush time down the proverbial toilet, He graciously sets us back on course when we turn to Him.
But today, this moment, we get a choice. We get to choose what we do with the gift of now. So I’m choosing to step into this new day — from out of my soft, white, cushy, free hotel covers — with this prayer on my lips, Lord, show me what to do with the gift of now, for my good and Your glory. And then I’ll pray those same words again and again trusting Him to faithfully guide.
Fill me, Lord…

YES. amen to all the things, sister. for whatever reason, this made me get teary eyed and chokey. I think it has less to do with PMS (though possible) and more to do with the work God is cultivating in my soul lately. I don’t know what it is He’s doing but it is good. I loved this. Right down to the Mexican food (hallelujah & amen), IKEA, and catching the calloused feet on the sheets (glad I’m not the only one with neglected tootsies). “I want to work when He says to work and pause when He says to pause.” <–YUP. I just started my summer break, and I was actually afraid of it this year. I'm really good at wasting time, and that leaves me with a pretty crappy feeling. Then I decided that fear was not of the Lord, and now… Pretty much going forward asking for wisdom and grace.
With His wisdom and grace –> the only possible way to move forward.
Oh boy. I realized as I read your words that I’m trying to teach this to my 4 year old. There’s a time to be silly and a time to settle down….a time to be loud and a time to speak quietly…and even a time to be silent. Yet, have I even really learned the lesson? My grown up version looks different, but it’s really the same thing….
So glad you got away and had a time of refreshing! Praying for those words to find their way into your heart and then onto the computer screen, sister!
