We need Him to be our closest friend. Need. As in, He designed us that way. We need to share everything with Him. We need to call on Him when our kids get wild or when our heart feels like it’s breaking. Need.
And as our most intimate friend, I think He means for us to keep some things secret — just between me and my Maker. Sweet promptings or quiet dreams that He whispers in the stillness, meant for me to ponder with Him alone.

But at times I’ve told. I’ve blabbed to quick about something particularly special between us. And as it leaves my eager mouth, I feel like I violated His trust. Like maybe I just forfeited some of His blessing.
Yet He graciously draws me back. I ask Him to forgive me…again. And again He leads me into some thing meant to be kept quiet.(Matthew 6:3-4, 6, 18)
Know this, my beloved brothers:
let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
(James 1:19)
We need Him to be our closest friend. The One we run to when life takes us by surprise. The One with whom we share our deepest desires. And when He leads, the One with whom we have some secrets.
Fill me, Lord…
How do you nurture an intimate “friendship” with God through the daily-ness of life?

Great thought provoking post. I need to learn to keep my mouth closed more :0)

Don’t we all. 😉

So true, Lara. This is one of those lessons I have learned as I’ve gotten older. There are intimacies between Jesus and me that no one else will ever be privy to know.

I love how you put that. Blessings, friend.

huh. A few years ago, I experieced Christ in a new way…a way that spoke to more of my senses than ever before. I shared with a pastor and my husband days later as I was so excited about it. hmm…secret…interesting.

Jolene, I definitely don’t think He leads us to keep everything a secret. We are called to tell and witness of His awesomeness. I guess I am referring to some things that I know in my spirit are really just between me and Him — sometimes only for a season — it’s those things I want to keep quiet. You are precious, sister.

so incredibly true! i just had this conversation with my daughter (6) last night. it started as a lesson in “counting your chickens before they’re hatched” and before i knew it we were talking about our “secret promises” from our Father in Heaven. beautiful and true and good to remember. thank you!

So great that you had that conversation with your daughter. What a beautiful truth to hear at such a young age. Seeds planted. Blessings!

“…meant for me to ponder with Him alone”. And I especially agree since I love to blog about things He’s shared with me. But sometimes I hold off, because I get the ‘feeling’ that it wasn’t meant for anyone but me. Or it wasn’t meant to be shared…right then. What a great post…

We definitely live in a self-disclosure world. And I agree, I think it is wise to be prayerful about what we blog. Thanks for sharing!

I just wrote about our friendship with God today, also! A good reminder… Not to share *everything.* Thank you!

Thanks, Misty.

I love this post! I sometimes will get a “message” from God. An answered prayer or something like that, and be so eager to go off to tell my closest “earthly” friends about it. Then I realize…..they really won’t understand. When God talks to us (and of course He does talk to us) it really is in a “language” that only we are meant to understand. You’re right. personally I need Him everyday all day. I talk to him all the time. In the car, while I’m working out, while I’m doing the dishes. Its just like He’s the “little friend” on my shoulder. I love God and not afraid to act like I do. Thanks for the post Lara!

It’s funny when something is so life changing to us in the quiet with Him and then we share it and it falls flat. I think, “well, you had to be there.”

Of all the descriptions of our Heavenly Father, I struggle with the idea he is my friend the most. Friend? Savior, yes. Redeemer, yes. Friend, huh? Thank you for this sweet reminder and encouraging word. He is my friend, my confident, the one who loves unconditionally and completely!

There are several things God has given to me during prayer and fasting that I struggle to keep to myself! I feel like Joseph sometimes–I just want to share with my sisters.
What I’m learning is that the only place I can find assurance and grace fully is from God.

Great thoughts, and also reminds me to seek Him in those quiet times so that I can hear Him. It is such a privilege and I just hate thinking that I so easily take it for granted!
God bless, and Aloha!
