Back in the late eighties, as I walked the eighth grade halls, I swore I would *never* wear bell-bottoms. But college hit, along with my desire to make a statement, and I donned some bells.
In high school I vowed to *never* drive a mini-van. Only old ladies who chauffeured kids drove mini-vans. Then four years ago, just before baby number three was born, we bought the mini-van which we now affectionately refer to as the Blue Bling.
Swagger Wagon, “Bring the beat back, ’cause yo I got more to say.”}
But the biggest never ever was the βhβ word. For years I declared with confidence that I would *never* homeschool. Never-ever homeschool. Yet I recently ordered Kindergarten books for my middle son. I say “books” because the word “curriculum” makes my blood pressure rise. I have issues.
I’m not a full-fledged homeschooler. Our oldest attends a Christian school (by God’s leading and miraculous provision). But my middle child will study his Kindergarten scholastics from our kitchen table this year while I wait to see what other *nevers* I end up swallowing.
With God all things are possible.
Matthew 19:26
As we delight in Him, He moves us. He transforms us. He can change hearts and prove our confident declarations wrong. I’m learning to speak my “nevers” carefully.
Fill me, Lord…
What have you said you would never do, be, or say?
How had life proved you wrong on your “nevers”?

Lara, I am so with you on the nevers, especially the minivan. But as of this coming fall, also the homeschool. My 5 year old is staying home with me and doing preK, he has been in formal preschool up until now. Everyday, I am reminding myself to see myself as a teacher and it’s kind of freaking me out. And when I read homeschool blogs, I still think I am not that type of mom. I work some outside the home, I am not creative, artsy, or even particularly resourceful. So I will be praying for you as we both start this endeavor. Out of curiosity, what book did you get for K? I just received in the mail yesterday a Heart of Dakota book for 2-5 yr olds (because my 3 yr old will be hanging with us some mornings too) and hope it will help me organize things.
Blessings, Vicky

I totally get the “freaking out” thing and I still don’t think I’m “that type” either. (Whatever “that type” is…) But I guess we just have to do what He leads us to do and trust it best. Regarding books, actually a friend of mine just told me about the Heart of Dakota program. I just pieced mine together based on homeschooler’s reviews; and I don’t even remember the names of the books off the top of my head. (See?! I’m so not prepared for this.) One was for math, one for phonics, one for drawing/writing. I’ll have to let you know once they arrive in the mail. Blessings to you, Vicky.

I’m with you. When I left Louisiana at the ripe age of not-quite-18, I said I would NEVER come back to the God-forsaken place. Too much hurt. Too many bad memories. But guess where I am today–where I’ve been for pretty much the last 7 years? Back in my home town in LA. π NEVER say never. π (It’s a God thing, and I’m very thankful to be here now!)
Lara Gibson Williams says
Never say never. Praying He continues to heal those tender places. {hugs}

Ha. Iceland, huh?! I haven’t actually said that one.

Yes, God does like to turn our words back on us, for the good of others as well as ourselves.

You’re right. I’m trusting Him moment by moment on this one.

I repeatedly and loudly declared to (of all people) my homeschooling friends that I would NEVER homeschool for many, many reasons. So, here we are in our 3rd year of homeschooling (loving it!) and my beloved friends have never once made me eat crow like I sooooo deserved. However, I still don’t have a mini-van!!! π
Lara Gibson Williams says
Oh, you need a minivan. π

I said that same “never” too! Until God, through my hubby, convinced me differently. π “Be careful what words you speak”, He says, “You just might end up swallowing them…”
Lara Gibson Williams says
You did?! I didn’t know you had said “never” to the “h” word.

Oh yes, I was dead set against it! My hubby had to work on my for a whole 2 years before I agreed. π Now I can’t imagine it any other way. Who’da thunk?

I,too, steered clear of the “h” word. And here I am, homeschooling my 7th grade daughter…for the first time! Honestly, we have a week behind us and I am loving it. Though she may not admit it, she acts like she does,too. Now I am wondering why I avoided it all this time. Oh, and yes, we own a minivan.
let’s pray for each other!

Ha. Yes. Let’s pray for each other. I’m encouraged to hear that it’s going well with your daughter. Good job, sister-friend.
