Lara Howard

teaching women to think on true things

November 2, 2011 By Lara

my rap debut

Yes, you read correctly. I’m going to rap for you today. Sorta.

As some of you know, I’m a fan of “redeemed” rap. The rap music that points to Jesus. So before I left for that conference I mentioned yesterday, some of my fellow bloggers — knowing of my love for rap — asked if I would be rapping at the conference.

Well, I laughed about the idea but then prayed about the idea and God inspired this little rhyme. The opportunity never arose for me to share it at Relevant — which was probably a good thing since the thought of doing this on-stage before 225 of my favorite bloggers made me a bit nauseous.

So instead, here it is, from the other side of a screen. My rap debut. (Excuse the poor video quality.)

Pouring out onto a world craving the Real One.
The only True One.
Life-Giver, Breath-Sustainer, Joy-Infuser,
Sin-Exchanger, Peace-Producer, Heart-Exposer
Out of love.
A love beyond comprehension, explanation, and all good reason.
A love that pierces the stone cold and pursues the runner sold into slavery to flesh desire.
A love that lifted me,
and then got into me,
and had its way with me,
and now in spite of me,
flows out of me.
In it He takes my restless heart apart,
And fills my thirsty soul to the full.
So with arms that have been freed I reach up to Him that I’d be spent for Him,
Consumed by Him, Overflowing Him,
Onto this world craving the Real One.
Have Your way with me.
If You would grace me, the chance to honor Thee,
with words I bow the knee and express what it is You mean to me,
that they might see You —
Reigning,
And sustaining,
Mesmerizing,
Satisfying
The yearning of the weary soul.
And though I fail You. And humbly need You
To mend me and cleanse me, transform me that You would send me
Out into this world trying to stand from the Fall.
So take my pen. Spill out from within. To You I give it all again.

I’m sure Lecrae will be knocking on my door any minute now.

Fill me, Lord

Um. So. What crazy dream do you have within you?
What if He placed it there with purpose? What if.

That is beautiful!! And let me tell you – it has taken me a long time to admit to anyone that I love rap. But there is freedom in sharing and friends have pointed me to Christian rappers that have blessed my soul – like Propaganda. Thank you so much for sharing!

I haven’t heard of Propaganda. I’ll have to check them out. Two of my favorite artists are Lecrae and Shai Linne. Freedom, sister, freedom. 😉

That was awesome, as for dreams for our lives, I believe God puts certain things in our hearts which He would like for us to do. Just like He did with your rap.

So listen up, “roomie”….I’m sitting here a thinkin’ how did I not be knowin’ that you are so talented. so musical. so creative. Oh, yes, I knew all along that you were oh so wonderful, so worshipful, so Spirit-ful, and now I fall back in amazement and astonishment at His working in and through you. (Well….a weak, weak attempt at some rapping back at ya, but I was BLESSED by your deput. Requesting front row seats with backstage passes, please!) Love you~

Lara, I’m back! I just had to enjoy this without fully commenting for several hours! I’m about to head to bed, but I had to google your blog and find this video to watch one more time. I am just touched in this really unique way – it’s fun and crazy and so deep and so … unusual! But isn’t that God? His Word is always fresh and alive. And you’re doing that … No one could watch this and yawn.
